FAQ Food

  • Is it safe for coeliacs to eat at Paladar?

Yes, we are rated as one of the top dedicated gluten-free restaurants in London and are 100% coeliac safe.

  • Is Paladar really 100% gluten-free?

Yes, our kitchen is dedicated gluten-free. The flours we use are mainly made from corn (maize) or cassava. We do not use wheat, barley, rye or other grains that contain gluten in our kitchen. We also do not use oats.

From the bar most drinks are gluten-free. We normally have at least one gluten-free beer and our Mexican whiskey is made from corn (maize).

  • Can you cater to my allergies and food intolerances?

It is extremely important that we know if you have any allergies (which can be life-threatening if severe). We always check before you order, but it is helpful if we know in advance when booking.

Whilst we take great care to avoid cross-contamination, please note we will not guarantee that there are no traces of nuts or other allergens in any of our food. On rare occasions we may have to decline a reservation if the allergy is very severe and we feel a guest might be at risk.

Please check our Allergen Matrix (below) if you would like detailed information about allergens found in each dish.

A note about our cooking oils: We use soya oil for deep frying of some dishes, but we can deep fry in another oil for those with allergies to soya if we know in advance. We also use rapeseed oil in the preparation of some dishes, but we are not able to change this.

  • Is your food very spicy?

Some dishes are more spicy than others, but our cuisine is generally very approachable. We do use chillies (aji) but the spiciness is not in the same league as some African and Southeast Asian dishes. In many cases we can put spicy sauces on the side. Our staff are ready to assist in this respect and make suggestions.

  • What are Paladar’s signature dishes?

Some of the “evergreen” stand-out dishes at Paladar include:
    Plantain crisps with guacamole
    Tuna Tostadas
Tapioca Cheese Croquettes with guava sauce
    Cochinita Pibil
Roasted aubergine with Maya humus and black bean sauce
Purple corn Churros with coffee dulce de leche and chocolate chilli dips

  • Is your food suitable for children? Do you have a menu for kids?

We do not have a special children’s menu. Our dishes are designed to be shared, so children can participate in the discovery of the food and try several different dishes. Our staff can make recommendations, and we can put sauces on the side if necessary.

  • Do you have many options for vegetarians and vegans?

We have several dishes for vegetarians and vegans. These are all clearly marked on the menus.
For vegans we have a separate vegan menu, which also lists those wines that are suitable for vegans.

  • Is your food halal?

We have a number of vegetarian, vegan and seafood dishes, which may be considered halal. The chicken is halal – please check with your server regarding other meat.
However, we do serve pork and alcohol in our restaurant; some Muslims with particularly strong beliefs may therefore regard the restaurant as unsuitable to dine in.

  • Does Paladar have a Pre-Theatre Menu?

Guests arriving between 4.45pm and 5.45pm Tuesday-Friday can order from our great value Weekday Set Menu as a “pre-theatre” offer (two or three courses).

This menu is not generally offered in the early evening; please ask for it when you arrive and/or mention it when booking.

See our Special Offers page for further information.

  • How and when can we order the Tasting Menu at Paladar?

Chef Jose’s Tasting Menu should ideally be requested before arriving, and the last sitting for the Tasting Menu is at 8.15pm (6.15pm on Sundays). This is partly because we recommend a minimum of two-and-a-half hours to enjoy the Tasting Menu.
We do not serve the Tasting Menu for parties of more than 10 guests. (We offer the Fiesta Sharing Feast Menu for parties of more than 10). On Friday and Saturday evenings we may have to restrict the maximum table size for the Tasting Menu to four – the only exception being the Chef’s Table, where we can offer the Tasting Menu for up to 10 guests every day of the week if booked in advance.
Because it is presented as a series of small courses we do not recommend mixing-and-matching the Tasting Menu with the Daily Menu on a table.
Please note, we will always try to accommodate guests who would like to have the Tasting Menu without requesting it in advance, but it is not always possible to do this – especially on very busy evenings.
Tasting Menu Tuesdays offer the opportunity to try the Tasting Menus with a 20% discount. This applies with or without the wine pairings. Please mention this offer when booking as it is not applied automatically.

  • Do we have to have the Tasting Menu if we request the Chef’s Table?

For a special occasion we would recommend the Tasting Menu (with or without the wine pairings) when booking the Chef’s Table. However, if you prefer to order from the daily menu that is absolutely fine.

Please note, however, that if you want to  book the Chef’s Table there is a minimum spend (including food, drinks and discretionary service charge) of £600, irrespective of the number of guests on the table.

  • Is the Tasting Menu suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

There is a vegetarian Tasting Menu and we can tweak this to be fully vegan. Please let us know in advance if you are vegan and we can give you a vegan Tasting Menu experience.

  • Can one of us have the regular Tasting Menu and the other the veg version?

Yes, you can “mix-and-match” the regular and vegetarian/vegan Tasting Menus. It is possible, for example, for one person on the table to have a vegetarian or vegan Tasting Menu and the other(s) to have the regular one.
It would be helpful if you could let us know about this when booking.

  • Can we still order from the Daily Menu at lunchtime and early evening (pre-theatre)?

Yes, you can order from either the Daily Menu or the Weekday Set Menu on weekday lunches and early evening.

  • Can you do anything special for our birthday? Can you bake a cake for us?

We do not generally bake cakes in-house, but we can supply wonderful birthday, wedding and anniversary gluten-free cakes from a local artisan cake maker. If this is of interest, please contact us by phone or email well in advance.

We have many birthday celebrations at Paladar and for most birthdays, we put some candles onto one of our desserts (or the dessert platter) and bring it to the table with a song

  • Can we bring our own birthday cake?

Yes, you are welcome to bring a cake along as long as you also having some of our desserts. If you are having one of our Fiesta Menus or the Sharing Set Menu, the dessert is included.

However, if you are ordering from the Daily Menu and do not want to order some of our desserts (ie you want to have the cake is in lieu of our desserts), then we would charge you a “cakeage” fee of £2.50 per person.

Either way, we are happy to keep the cake for you and then bring it out with candles and a song for the birthday boy/girl at the relevant moment!

  • Do you have a Braille menu for blind or partially sighted guests?

Unfortunately, we do not offer a Braille menu but our staff will always do their best to assist guests with any sort of disability.

  • Do your menus have pictures of the dishes on them?

We have tablets, which show little video clips of our dishes on them.
First-time guests generally find it can be very helpful to have an accurate visual representation of the dishes we offer.

  • Do you offer set menus or group packages?

For group bookings (parties of more than ten) we generally only offer one of our Sharing Menus (Fiesta Sharing Feast Menu, Fiesta Lite Menu or Sharing Set Menu).

We also offer various drinks packages for group bookings:
    • 6 bottles of our Chilean “house” red or white wine for £150 (equates to £25 per bottle)
    • 10 bottles of Favela Beer for £50.
    • 10 standard soft drinks for £25

Please see our Group Bookings and Private Hire web page for more information.
